Oak Grove Driveway Paving

Asphalt paving in Oak Grove is mostly residential, on lots that have been lived on for a long time. Oak Grove is an unincorporated community in Clackamas County, bordered by Milwaukie to the north, Oatfield to the east, Jennings Lodge to the south and the Willamette River to the west. The townsite was platted in the 1890s, and the 2020 census counted 17,290 residents in 7,635 housing units. We replace and repair driveways, resurface, sealcoat and handle small lots for businesses along McLoughlin Boulevard.

A name from a lunch break

According to Wikipedia, Edward W. Cornell suggested the name Oak Grove after a crew ate lunch in a stand of oak trees. A post office called Creighton opened in 1904 and was renamed Oak Grove in 1907, and the local rail station was first called Center. Trees are still a big part of the neighborhood. Mature trees shade driveways, keep them damp, drop leaves that hold moisture and push roots under the pavement. We repair root-lifted sections, set new edges back from trunks where possible and recommend keeping the surface clear.

Long-lived lots, tired pavement

Because Oak Grove has been settled for more than a century, many driveways have had several rounds of patching or overlays. When a driveway is breaking apart in many places, more patches only delay the problem. We take out the old layers, check and rebuild the base, and repave. Where the driveway is still firm with only surface cracking, an overlay can make sense, as long as it will not build the surface too high at the garage or street.

County rules apply here

Since Oak Grove is unincorporated, Clackamas County, not a city, oversees work in the public road right-of-way. Its Roadway Standards require a permit before work in the right-of-way begins and list a few maintenance tasks, such as sealing pavement, that do not need one. If your driveway project changes the entrance or affects the road edge, we check with the county first.

Along McLoughlin and the river

Oregon Route 99E runs through as McLoughlin Boulevard, about 8 miles north to downtown Portland and about 4 miles south to Oregon City. Businesses along it have small lots that need patching, sealcoat and striping. On the river side, the community includes Hog Island in the Willamette, and homes close to the water often sit on damp ground where a solid, well-drained base is essential.

Oak Grove Questions

Who handles permits for driveway work in Oak Grove?

Oak Grove is unincorporated, so Clackamas County oversees work in the public road right-of-way. Work entirely on your property, like sealcoating, is usually simpler. We confirm before scheduling.

Can you fix roots pushing up my driveway?

Yes. We cut out the lifted section, deal with the root where it is safe for the tree, rebuild the base and repave.

My driveway has been overlaid before. Can it be done again?

Sometimes, but repeated overlays build height and old cracks return. Often it is better to remove the layers and repave on a rebuilt base.

Do you pave businesses along McLoughlin Boulevard?

Yes. We patch, sealcoat and stripe small business lots and keep entrances open during the work.
