Asphalt Work at the Gateway to the Gorge
Asphalt paving in Washougal serves a town that calls itself the Gateway to the Gorge. Washougal sits on the north bank of the Columbia River about 18 miles east of Vancouver, and Wikipedia notes it is the southernmost incorporated place in Washington state. It was a small town for most of its history and then grew quickly: 4,764 residents in 1990, 8,595 in 2000, 14,095 in 2010 and 17,039 in 2020. The 2020 census counted 6,444 housing units. We pave new driveways, repair and resurface older ones, sealcoat, and pave and stripe lots.
Two eras of driveways
Washougal's growth since 1990 means its homes fall into two groups. Older homes near downtown tend to have short driveways that have been patched for decades. Newer subdivisions built since the 1990s have driveways that are mostly sound underneath but now show surface cracking and wear. For the older group, we usually recommend removing the old asphalt and rebuilding the base. For the newer group, crack filling, sealcoat or an overlay is often enough.
A mill town on the railroad
Washougal incorporated in November 1908, the year it was connected to the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway. A textile mill opened in 1910, and Pendleton Woolen Mills took it over in 1912; it became a major part of the local economy. A new east-west highway along the Columbia, now part of State Route 14, opened in 1927. Today SR 14 connects Washougal to Camas and Vancouver, and businesses along it and downtown have lots that need regular patching, sealcoat and restriping.
The Washougal River
The Washougal River runs along the north side of downtown and separates the city from Camas. Homes near the river and on low ground can have damp soil under their driveways for much of the year. Pavement over wet ground needs a well-compacted crushed rock base and good drainage so water moves off the surface and away from the edges. We check for soft spots and drainage problems before quoting any replacement.
Permits in Washougal
Washougal is a separate city from Camas and Vancouver and sets its own rules for driveway approaches and work in the street. If your project changes where the driveway meets the road, we check with the city first.

Washougal Questions
Should I overlay or replace my Washougal driveway?
If it has surface cracks but feels solid, an overlay can work. If it is broken up, rutted or soft, the base needs rebuilding and replacement is better.
Do you pave business lots along SR 14?
Yes. We patch, overlay, sealcoat and restripe commercial lots and phase the work to keep them open.
My driveway is near the river and always damp. Can it be paved well?
Yes, with a well-compacted crushed rock base and drainage that moves water away from the surface and edges.
Do you need a permit to repave my Washougal driveway?
Work entirely on your own lot is usually simpler, but a change to where the driveway meets the street can need city approval. We check with the City of Washougal before scheduling.
How long does a new driveway take?
Most residential driveways are paved in one to two days once the base is ready. Tear-out and base work can add time, and weather sets the schedule.
