Sherwood Driveways, Mostly From One Big Boom
Asphalt paving in Sherwood is shaped by one remarkable decade. The city had 3,093 residents in 1990 and 11,791 in 2000, a 281.2 percent jump, then kept growing to 18,194 in 2010 and 20,450 in 2020. The 2020 census counted 7,132 housing units. So most Sherwood driveways went in over roughly 25 years, and a large share of them are reaching the same age at the same time. We pave and replace driveways, repair and resurface, sealcoat, and handle small commercial and HOA lots.
Driveways at the 20 to 30 year mark
Asphalt laid in the late 1990s and early 2000s has now been through more than 20 wet winters. Typical signs at this age are a gray, rough surface, cracks spreading from the garage and the street edge, and small potholes where a crack let water reach the base. The question is whether the base underneath is still sound. If it is, an overlay gives you a new surface for much less than a full replacement. If there are ruts, soft areas or broken edges, we recommend taking the old asphalt out and starting over. We test and look before we recommend either.
Younger driveways need upkeep, not replacement
For homes built in the 2000s and 2010s, the best value is usually maintenance: fill cracks while they are hairline, then sealcoat every few years. Sealcoat slows the drying and oxidizing that turns asphalt brittle, and it keeps water from getting into the surface. It needs a dry, warm stretch to cure, so we schedule it for summer.
Old Town Sherwood
The town started as Smockville, named for James Christopher Smock, who founded it, and was renamed Sherwood in 1891. It incorporated as a town in 1893. In the 1890s its main industry was a pressed brick yard, which closed in 1896 after the financial panic of 1893. In 1911 the town had 350 residents inside a city limit of one square mile; it now covers nearly 4.5 square miles. The original core still has older homes with narrow drives and alleys, where we work with smaller equipment and careful edges against old curbs, walks and fences.
Wetlands next door
Sherwood calls itself the Home of the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge. Low, damp ground is common in parts of the area, and pavement over wet soil needs extra attention to the base and to drainage. We excavate to firm material where needed, compact crushed rock in layers and shape the driveway so water leaves the surface instead of soaking the edges.

Sherwood Questions
My Sherwood driveway is about 25 years old. What are my options?
If the base is still firm, an overlay is often the best value. If there are ruts, soft spots or broken edges, a full replacement is the better long-term choice.
How often should I sealcoat?
Every few years is common for residential driveways, with cracks filled first. We do it in dry summer weather.
Do you work in Old Town Sherwood?
Yes. We bring smaller equipment for narrow drives and alleys and finish edges carefully against older curbs and walks.
Can you widen my Sherwood driveway?
Usually, yes. We match the new section to the existing slope and height, cut a clean seam and make sure it drains. If the widening reaches the street, we check what the city requires first.
